I think his star has faded from what he was, but when you spend £500Mil in 2 seasons adding to what was already a good squad, it's a bit hard for ANY manager not to be successfu. Allardyce would do the same jobl. Regardless of that, he's always known his centre half's, and he rates Jones very highly.

In fairness to smalling, I think van gaal properly sorted him out - he was excellent under the dutchmans guidance when before I think he flattered to deceive and had been fortunate to have previously been surrounded by vidic evra rio etc.
In fact, mourinho really reaped thebrewards of van gals work last season because the organisation was already instilled in the team.
In terms of England, it's odd that we don't really have a proper world class centre back any more. It used to be a given that we'd be fine in that position at least. Tomkins should look back with a twinge of regret at a missed opportunity because if he'd kicked on and fulfilled his promise he'd have had caps by now. Much as I hold Allardyce in total disdain, his comments about how Tomkins could have been an excellent player but was more worried about his hair than his performance probably do hold some water

They've had people like Bruce, Pallister, Stam, Rio, Vidic playing there. Those players are true quality. You compare Jones to them and it almost makes you laugh.
And, as I said, that's why we have become insignificant on the world stage. Because we have bang average players at international level.

Interesting debate ref the CB's.
I've never really taken any notice of Jones really, probably because he rarely plays, or never use to. Bit of an old school CB I suppose. Mourinho does value that in a CB, as he usually wants his defenders just to 'do a job'
Cahill and Smalling I rate, but they are a level below real top class. Cahill however has held down his place at Chelsea for years now despite them spending 20+ mil on defenders at the drop of a hat.
Stones will never become the star some were hoping. He has stood still or even gone backwards and lost confidence, to turn that around now would require a huge effort.

Anyway, as opinions go, you said Lallana has been absolutely dgshit for England, when he's been England's best player (confirmed by winning every England player of the year award recently) so I'll probably ignore yours about Jones, and go with Jose Mourinho's, who has him first choice at Man Utd (Smalling, who you said was complete and utter dgshit in the past, is 4th choice).
